ABUJA- SPEAKER of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara on Tuesday said the Nigerian parliament is resolved to ensuring that all necessary legislative tools will be used to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians as recession bites harder. Dogara disclosed this while inaugurating a 20-man tactical committee on recession declaring that “we introduced Sectoral Debate on various aspects of the economy as a legislative initiative to address the national economic problems. “We are therefore resolved to ensuring that we utilise the necessary legislative tools to ameliorate the suffering of our people.
The committee headed by Rep Bode Ayorinde which was originally 16 members were increased to 20 when four members of the House indicated interest to be part of the economic recession committee. Announcing this development during the inauguration, Dogara lamented that despite the heterogeneity and diverse natural resources, the nation paid more attention to oil resulting in over dependency on that factor. He said: “Successive governments failed to save during the period of oil boom in Nigeria until we are confronted with the realities of this economic recession.” Dogara added that stakeholders in the economy had warned about the recession and the possible consequences, said, “as a parliament, we are committed towards ensuring that the sufferings experienced by the ordinary Nigerians are alleviated. “We affirmed that the centre point of our legislative agenda will be to collaborate with the various arms of government and the Senate to legislate for the common good of the Nigerian citizens with emphasis on reforms that will promote rapid national growth and development, tackle poverty, unemployment…. Indeed, our major legislative initiative was to support diversification of Nigeria’s economy to foster its development from mono product economy to a multi-product economy.”
