The president who was represented by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said that the importance of the road to the nation's economy can not be over-emphasisef, noting that that is why the Federal Government wants the 32 kilometer road completed on time.
On why the reconstruction contract was giving to the Dangote group, the President said apart investing heavily in the Nigerian economy unlike most of his contemporaries who take their money to banks abroad, Dangote is actually advancing his resources amounting to several billions for the project.
He noted that Dangote is paying his annual tax upfront for the project, making the issue of lack of funds which affect other government projects irrelevant.
He further noted that four of Dangote's companies last year paid N22 billion as tax.
In his response, Aliko Dangote, assured that they will deliver on the project far ahead on time, since funding will not be a problem.
He explained that at completion the road will last up to 40 to 50 years before maintenance on it will be required.
He said the reason for using cement is not because one of his company produce cement but because they are determined to give Nigeria the best of infrastructure.
He further explained that his group paid a total of N97.6 billion last year and the amount is expected to rise to N100 billion this year and about N200 billion next year.
