Harboursandport.com - Lagos: Port and Cargo Handling Services, a subsidiary of Sifax Group has handled a total of 130,000, Twenty Equivalent Units, TEUs containers in the first half of the year which is 275 containers less the number handled in 2018.

Managing Director of the Ports and Cargo, John Jenkins who disclosed this Tuesday in Lagos, said the company is targeting 290,000 at the end of the year.

In his words “We try to do better than we did last year.  For the half year we handled 130,000 TEUs that is 275 less than what we had last year and this is due to the congestion on the roads.

“However we are expecting to handle 290,000 TEUs this year. Also with the increase in exports we are pleased to announce that we handle about 4,000 exports every week which is more than the amount of exports we handled last year which is because of the general increase in exportation this year.

“The country has in this year experience an upsurge in exportation. However we handle 3,000-4,000 empty containers weekly which have been very stressful and challenging. With the menace of empty containers being parked haphazardly on the roads, everyday, we have people bringing in empty containers but it is hugely dependent on what we can send back.

“When they are much we cannot bring more laden containers in. Every day due to the congestion, empty containers are expected to exit the terminals first before new ones can be able to come in. Right now the containers are finding their way out and the congestion is reducing. We also handle 250 laden containers every day,” he noted.
