Support indigenous ship owners, SOAN tell NIMASA, other agencies

Harboursandport.com: Lagos - The Shipowners’ Association of Nigeria, (SOAN), has called on the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), and other relevant agencies to seriously consider the indigenous Nigerian vessels in the maritime business in order to increase the nation’s economic development.
President of SOAN, Dr. McGeorge Onyung

Speaking on behalf of the association, the president, Shipowners’ Association of Nigeria, SOAN, Dr. McGeorge Onyung, said that the absence of Nigerian-owned vessels ought to be conducting business activities within Nigerian waters is very inimical to the nation’s economic development.
Onyung, while addressing the public during the 4-day Oil Trading and Logistics Expo (OTL, 2019) conference, recently held in Lagos, equally added that there is an urgent need to empower Nigerians to own vessels.
The SAON boss, in mutual collaboration with other maritime industry experts, used the opportunity to push for fully indigenous Nigerian vessels to be given the chance to lift crude oil, saying it would be a big boost to the indigenous shipping business, as well as creating job opportunities for the teeming young population.
Recall that the federal government, through the Cabotage Vessel Finance Fund, (CVFF), has released a fund yet to be disbursed by NIMASA to the indigenous ship owners, in order to meet up with the required global standard.
