Harboursandport.com: Lagos - Two
persons, Ebubechukwu Nnabike 19 years old and Peter Nwaeke 33 years old, were
killed this morning along the Mile2-Berger yard axis’s of Tin-can-Oshodi
expressway following the spraying of tear gas on the face of a truck driver who
ran into several cars and knocked the two young men said to be members of the
Berger Motor Dealers Association, BMDA.
The truck driver was said to have sped into the road
that was clear at about 10 am hoping to avoid payment of the illegal toll but
was accosted by the police officer just by United Bank for Africa, UBA, by Berger
yard.
The officer was said to have climbed on the driver’s
side of the truck and sprayed tear gas on the driver’s face. This made the driver lost control of the truck,
ramming into several cars; one of which knocked down and killed the two young
men.
Chairman, United Berger Motor Dealers Association, UBMDA, Don-Metche
Nnadiekwe, who was at the scene of the incident, described it as a shameful act
on the side of the corrupt Nigerian Police who has been extorting money from
truck drivers.
In his words, “Honestly, today is a black day because of the Nigerian
Police Force that has been given a gun to protect lives and properties, now
turned to be the killer of the people.
“This morning, we are all coming to the Berger yard, I was at the back
of the incident and the Police were chasing one truck driver who refused to
stop.
“I learned that he has given them money or does not have more and they
were stopping him but he refused to stop and they started chasing him and the
little space they got, they began to spray tear gas in his eyes.
“So the man was struggling on how to control the truck and just ended up
killing people.
“And people started pursuing the policeman but he ran away. Two people
died from the incident and the trailer got damaged.
“The thing is funny, trailers here have been causing a lot of havoc and
our people die every day. What is happening from Mile 2 to Berger is an eyesore.
“Police will come and even tell the trucks to follow one way from on top
of Mile 2 bridge to this place(Berger under bridge), and when they come they
block everywhere and when you ask them, they will tell you the police have
collected money and ordered them to park.
“We have been trying to find out the policeman in charge who is ordering
them to follow one way and block everywhere.
“You see this brutality from the police and task force, the federal government should look into it or else we will rise up and fight for our
lives,” he noted.
