Report gathered that MSC had been complaining over Ports and Cargo’s refusal to
make space available at its terminal for goods meant for export from the
terminal.
Investigation revealed
that while other terminals are cooperating with the Shipping Line to facilitate
easy export through their terminals, Ports and Cargo have been refusing to make
space available for them.
As a result, the
shipping line had dragged the terminal operator to the Nigerian Shippers
Council, NSC to intervene.
The Executive
Secretary of NSC, Hassan Bello, as a result of the complain of the shipping
line, had approached Ports and Cargo to make space available for export goods
handled by MSC.
Vanguard Maritime
Report gathered that a solution to the problem was reached on May 6th, 2020
when the Bello personally went to terminal to witness the first shipment of
export cargo from the facility.
When contacted, Bello
confirmed the visit to the terminal over export, expressing happiness that the
first consignments left the terminal May 6th, 2020.
He also confirmed that
MSC Shipping handles about 65 per cent of export from the country and should be
given all the assistance needed.
Speaking with Vanguard
Maritime Report on the issue, Corporate Affairs Manager of Sifax Group, parent
body of Ports and Cargo, Muyiwa Akande, said he does not have all the details
but promised to get back to our report.
Akande however noted
that there is congestion at the port currently as a result of COVID-19 which
affected clearance of goods out of the ports. He also noted that the condition
of the port access roads as well as the traffic situation which make transfer to
boxes from the terminal to the off-dock terminal very difficult.
