Harboursandport.com: Lagos - Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Shippers Council, NSC, Bashir Sheriff Machina, has said that there is need to put in place scientific tariff system to make the nation’s seaports effective and competitive.

Machina
made this position known at a stakeholders’ interactive session on the
arbitrary hike in the peak season charges said that the issue of cost is
indispensable in shipping.
To
this end, he noted that the NSC is statutorily in charge of arriving at
reasonable tariff.
He
pointed out that as a result, “the Council is negotiating tariff with shipping
companies which will reduce the cost of doing business, thereby making Nigeria
more friendly to shippers.
“I
urge the terminal operators to please embrace negotiations in arriving at fair
pricing of shipping companies,” he noted.
Governing
Council boss said the ministry of transportation has directed shipping companies
to comply with the directive which will make negotiation and moderation of
charges easier.
According
to him, “Recently, the Federal Ministry of Transport has directed all regulated
service providers to submit their charges to Nigerian Shippers Council for
negotiation and moderation. I urge the parties to oblige.
