Harboursandport.com: Lagos - Immediate past President of the
National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, NAGAFF, Eugene
Nweke said that multinational corporations prefer to ship industrial waste to
developing countries than going through the global standard for treatment
and handling of industrial wastes or gas flaring.
Nweke explained that it is cheaper for corporations to ship such cargo
to countries like Nigeria. He noted that companies from some Asia countries are
found of shipping such consignments to less developed countries.
According to him, “It is cheaper to
Ship and abandon industrial chemical (toxic) wastes to Nigeria ports than go
through the rigour of International practices/procedures with regards to
treatment and handling of industrial wastes or gas flaring, which poses great
danger to our environmental ecology.
“Again, the essence of International
Cargo Tracking Note, CTN or a Container security initiatives program cannot be
overemphasis. One big question, "Is NESRA still functional?" he
queried.
Recall that Vanguard Newspaper had
reported that a 20-foot container suspected to contain toxic waste has been
abandoned at Berger Suya bus stop, along the Cocoanut – Mile2 end (close to the
pedestrian bridge) of the Oshodi/Apapa expressway.
The specialised container with number TLLU 2813171was said to be loaded
with already rusting drums stacked six drums wide and five drums high. On
Tuesday, the truck head has been removed leaving the body laden with the
consignment.
Vanguard findings revealed that the truck, whose plate number has also
been removed, may have been parked there for a long time.
Vanguard discovered that about 15 drums have been removed, sparking
fears that the consignment may have been pilfered.
