Customs Records 43.45% Increase In Revenue Generation, Exceeds Target For 2021

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) says it has generated a revenue of over N2.24Bn in 2021. This is even as it has exceeded its revenue target for the year with an increase of 43.45 percent from 2020.
According to a press statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Customs Service, Compt. Joseph O. Attah noted that in 2021, the Service generated the sum of N2,240,880,308,195.77 which is over the target of N1,678,715,016,014.00 set for the year and a 43.45% increase over the sum of N1,562,115,419,216.32 generated in 2020.

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC),  Col, Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) stressed that this feat was achieved as a result of resolute pursuit of what is right and willingness to adapt to changes brought by global health challenges occasioned by covid-19. He said that the service revenue generation profile has continued to be on the rise annually due to the ongoing reforms in the Service. 

The CGC also noted that as part of the efforts to prevent the entry of items that could compromise the Security of citizens, Economy and the well-being of Nigerians, the NCS has made seizures of 5,096 assorted items with a duty paid value of N13,796,646,685.60 and 160 suspects at different levels of Investigation or Prosecution.

According to the statement, other landmark achievements in 2021 capable of boosting national security and economy include "The installation of three (3) brand new Scanners in Apapa, Tin-Can Island and Onne Ports, introduction of mobile tracker, and Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for the use of Scanners, acquisition of rugged, gun trucks to secure anti-smuggling operatives in an increasingly hostile environment, and the E-customs take-off process which is now at the stage of final signing of agreement" it read in part.

The Customs boss reiterated that NCS remains totally comitted to the course of protecting national security and economy. He however called on Nigerians, especially the business community to "support the NCS as our borders open to African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in order to benefit from the trade agreement and other cross border activities".

Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) appreciated the increasing numbers of compliant traders noting that compliance is a patriotic thing to do by citizens who desire a better nation. He commended all Officers and Men of the NCS for their doggedness even as he charged them to do more in the New Year. Col. Hameed prayed for the repose of the souls of operatives who paid the supreme price in the course of fighting smugglers.
