In a bid to contribute to the development of basic education and literacy amongst students, the Rotaract Club of Platinum Minds have organised a spelling competition for selected secondary schools in Lagos state.
Platinium Minds is a youth wing of Rotary which is sponsored by Rotary Club of Canal Estate, Lagos which brings people from ages 18 to 30 above together for community service, development and leadership growth.
In his opening remark, the Imaginative President of Rotary club of Canal Estate, Lagos, Rotarian Yusuf Olayinka noted that the Spelling Bee competition is the first of its kind and it is projected to reach more students and schools in subsequent years. He however encouraged the beneficiaries of the Maiden competition to put in their best and be open to learn new words beyond winning the prizes.
"I want to encourage all the participants to put in their best. I also want to say that this will not be the last. We will want to make it a yearly thing and hopefully by next two or three years, we are going to have more participants. We are just using this one as the immediate one and like a trial and see how it will be. By next year, we are going to be having more schools who will be participating" Yusuf said.
On her part, the President of the Rotaract Club of Platinum Minds, Rotaract Adu Victoria Omolara informed that the Spelling Bee competition was organized to honour Rotary month of Basic Education and Literacy. She said it is aimed at giving the student basic education and literacy through the learning of more advanced words and building their confidence.
Adu stressed the importance of basic education and literacy amongst students for their capacity development. She however, advised students to pay more attention to their educational pursuits adding that learning never stops.
"This 2022 Spelling Bee Competition is something we want to be doing annually. It is actually aimed at helping the students according to our area of focus which is Basic Education and literacy. It is to help the students in learning more advanced words, build their confidence to compete with their counterparts and also give them learning varieties of work.
"According to our area of focus, literacy is something we need to always pay much importance to. It is something that is important in a country because if you want a country to develop, we need to take note of literacy, that is learning new things everyday. So I want to tell people out there that they should have it in mind that anywhere they go they need to keep it in mind to always learn new things" Adu concluded .
Also speaking, the Guest speaker of the event, Rotarian Maureen Osorunba spoke about drugs and the effects of drugs. She elaborated on the dangers of drug abuse advising the students not to indulge in drugs to avoid health issues and future complications.
Six Contestants from Three schools in Lagos state which participated in the Competition. The schools include: Okota Junior High School, Apata Memorial High School and Ajumoni Junior Grammar School. The winners were Olalekan Toyosin from Apata Memorial High School (1st position), Ubah Christabel from Apata Memorial High School (2nd position) and John Goodness Ozioma from Okota Junior High School (3rd position). The winners were given an iPad (1st), and two school bags (2nd and 3rd) as prizes.
Other participants include: Agboola Olamidotun Shalom from Okota Junior High School, Ugboko Daniel and Salaudeen Aliya from Ajumoni Junior Grammar School. Gifts were also presented to active Rotary members.
