5-Day Sit-At-Home: Unknown Gun Men Open Fire In Ebonyi State Market

Harboursandport.com: Ebonyi - Unknown gunmen open fire at a market in Nwakpu, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State causing bodily harm to several people in the market.

The unknown gunmen who are suspected to be enforcing the five-day sit-at-home declared by Simon Ekpa also set ablaze vehicles and motorcycles of people at the market for allegedly defying the order.

An eyewitness said the assailants were shooting indiscriminately at people as everybody ran in different directions in the ensuing pandemonium. One of the victims simply identified as Henry, said his vehicle was among the ones burnt by the unknown gunmen.

He said that he was also shot in the leg and cut on the head with an axe by the assailants, who left him in a pool of his blood.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Crime Officer in charge of the area, Kingsley Okorie said that when police got information about the attack at the market, they stormed the market, and on sighting the security agencies, the hoodlums fled.

"We gave them a hot pursuit but they escaped on a motorcycle through narrow paths to the bush", police said.

The officer said that one of the victims, Henry had been taken to the hospital where efforts were on to extract the bullets lodged in his thigh.

Reacting, the Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Barr. Simon Nwankwo who praised the security agencies for their prompt intervention added that the location of the incident has been cordoned off.

According to him, the situation is now under control as no life was lost following the ugly episode.

He further debunked the claim in some quarters that the location of the incident was gutted by fire.

"There's a manhunt for the perpetrators and very soon they will be arrested."
