Harboursandport.com: Lagos - Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, has said that the recent award as the 'Best regulator Of The Year' by the Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Association, COMTUA, will spour the Council to do more.
Jime made this known while receiving the award from the National Coordinator of the Port Standing Task Team, PSTT which is the implementing arm of the Nigerian Port Process Manual, NPPM, Moses Fadipe.
The Shippers Council boss explained that but for the part played by the truckers, moving cargo out of the port which is 90 percent reliant on haulage by road, would not have been easy.
According to him, “Truckers are a very strategic partner in the delivery of services in our ports. I believe we ought to declare that perhaps without the role of truckers, then as far as hinterland connectivity and the evacuation of cargo from seaports. I believe it is almost impossible given the fact that for now, our country is almost close to 90 percent dependent on that mode of evacuation and so, there is no question in my mind that COMTUA is a very, very strategic partner in this enterprise and as an economic regulator whose major mandate is to ensure efficiency and effective cargo clearing process, stakeholders such as COMTUA is a key determinant of how you can efficiently deliver services in this industry.
“So, the award in my estimation is the recognition that the partnership is bearing fruit and that we need to continue on the same pathway. In other words, the work of the PSTT must continue in a way that will meet the expectations of stakeholders.
“So, I’d like to hope that for COMTUA to consider honoring the Council with this award, it is consistent with hopefully, that belief also that the work of the PSTT in the Shippers Council. So, we welcome this development and we will continue to do our best to make sure that we’re performing a necessary mandate in a way that the core objective of achieving quality and efficient service delivery in the maritime domain.
“On behalf of the NSC, I want to extend our appreciation to the COMTUA for recognizing the work of the NSC, particularly in the area of economic regulation and we want to assure the industry that we are not going to be resting on our oars but continue to do even better in terms of the exercise of our mandate so once again, thanks so much.”
“Presenting the award for the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the NSC, Emmanuel Jime in his officer, Fadipe said the Council was commended for its efforts to clear the port access roads as well as regulate the economic activities in the industry in line with its responsibility as Port Economic Regulator, PER.
He said COMTUA had announced that the body has returned to the PSTT which comprises stakeholders in the industry. He further explained that he had to stress the fact the “Rule of Engagement” has not changed following the controversy that resulted in COMTUA's decision to pull out of the PSTT in the first place.
