MMIA Customs Impounds Tramadol Worth N1.8BN

... Collects N21.4 bn In First Quarter

Harboursandport.com: Lagos - The Murtala Mohammad International Airport (MMIA) Command of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS said it impounded 23 packages of imported tramadol with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of M18 billion.

The Command also said it collected a total of N21.4 billion in the first quarter of the year.



Disclosing this Wednesday in Lagos, Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Mohammad Sanni Yusuf, the N21.4 billion is a 21.97 percent increase to the N17.5 billion collected in the corresponding period last year.

According to the Customs boss, "It is pertinent to note that in the corresponding period of 2022, the Command collected N17.5 billion, showing a progressive difference of the sum of N3.8 billion depicting a 21.97 percent increase.  

"It is worthy to note that the revenue activities of the Command comprise importation and exportation of legitimate goods, goods under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme, ETLS. 

On smuggling he said, "23 packages of pharmaceutical products. These seized items include: 22 packages of Tramadol, 225 milligrams (mg); 12 packages of Tramadol,120mg tablets.

"In the same vein, the Tramadol Tablets in our custody has been scheduled for handing over to the Commander of Narcotics, Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during this press briefing in the spirit of inter-departmental cooperation. 

"The above seizures were recorded based on intelligence – driven operations within the Airport. The total Duty Payable Value, DPV of the seizures stood at N1.8 billion.

"In the area of export trade, the period under review recorded exportation of goods worth N100.9 billion exported from the country. "These exported goods include: Non-Commercial and Commercial Foods with a total of weight of 653 tonnes and Free On Board, FOB value of N4.8 billion. The Command is working hard to promote export businesses to boost Forex earnings for the country.
