In a remarkable journey spanning over two decades, the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS) at Lagos State University (LASU) has evolved from its humble beginnings into a thriving center of education and excellence in the field of communication. Founded in the year 2000 as the Lagos State University School of Communication, the FCMS has consistently pushed boundaries to meet the dynamic demands of the communication industry.
The FCMS embarked on its educational voyage by admitting part-time students in 2000, marking its inception as the School of Communication. The following year, in 2001, it welcomed its first full-time cohort. The pioneering team of staff, which included luminaries such as Mr. OluJimi Olusola Kayode, Victor Akinpelu, Yinka Alawode, Tunde Akanni, Jide Jimoh, Lekan Akashoro, Mr. Oguntunwase, Kalejaiye Olugbenga, Rotimi Olatunji, Jacob Adeoye, Kunle Akinjogbin, Clement Akangbe, Joshua Adebola Dada, Omolade Atofojomo, Ridwan Adeyemi, Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, Professor Femi Sonaike, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, and Dr. Lai Oso, laid the foundation for a vibrant academic institution.
One of the most significant innovations at FCMS was the establishment of seven distinct departments, a groundbreaking move in Nigeria's education landscape. These departments included Journalism, Radio and TV broadcast, Public Relations and advertising, Information and Communication Technology, Book Development and Publishing, Photojournalism and Cinematography, and Human Communication. This forward-thinking approach ensured that students received specialized training in their chosen fields rather than being lumped under the broad umbrella of Mass Communication.
The FCMS's commitment to producing industry-ready graduates was evident through its rigorous curriculum, emphasizing extensive practical experience. Students embarked on media attachments, meticulously supervised by academic staff, to acquire the competence required for seamless integration into the mass media industry.
Over the years, the FCMS has achieved significant milestones:
1. Renaming and Expansion: The school was renamed Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication in honor of Alhaji Adebola Adegunwa, who generously donated the building where the school began its journey. It also expanded its academic offerings, introducing Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programs in Communication Studies in 2001, followed by a Professional Masters in Communication Studies (MCS) in 2005/2006.
2. Restructuring and Accreditation: To meet accreditation requirements, the school streamlined its seven Bachelor of Science degree programs into a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication program in 2007 and 2008. In 2013/2014, the school gained approval to commence a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program.
3. Relocation: In 2016, the FCMS moved to its current site on the main campus of LASU, enhancing its accessibility and presence.
4. Faculty Status: In August 2022, the FCMS achieved another significant milestone by transitioning into a faculty, officially becoming the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, in line with the unbundling of the Mass Communication program.
5. Notable Alumni: The FCMS takes pride in its alumni, including accomplished professionals like Yinka Adeparusi, a renowned photographer who won numerous international awards, Semiu Okanlawon, Dotun, Funmi Olusegun, and Dr. Stephen Fatonji, among others.
6. Academic Achievements: The FCMS consistently produces first-class graduates and has conferred over 27 Ph.D. degrees in various communication specializations. It received full accreditation from professional bodies like the Advertising Practitioner Council of Nigeria (now Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria ARGON).
7. International Collaborations: The FCMS has fostered collaborations and linkages with universities abroad, exemplified by its partnership with Birmingham University in the United Kingdom, facilitating student and staff exchange programs.
Underpinning these accomplishments is a commitment to academic excellence, industry relevance, and a focus on equipping graduates with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the communication sector. The FCMS continues to grow, with plans to expand its part-time programs and integrate industry professionals into its teaching and skills acquisition initiatives.
As the FCMS at LASU celebrates its rich history and looks ahead to an even brighter future, it remains dedicated to shaping the communication professionals of tomorrow and contributing to the development of the media industry in Nigeria and beyond.
