Persistent Blackout Sparks Online Protest in Kogberegbe Area of Ojota, Lagos State

A prolonged power outage in the Kogberegbe Area of New Garage, Ojota, Lagos State, has left residents in the dark for over a week, prompting an online protest by aggrieved community members.
The situation has caused severe hardships, with residents having to go to great lengths to meet their basic needs.

The blackout, which has persisted without any proactive action from the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC), has drawn the ire of Kogberegbe residents who have taken to social media platforms to voice their concerns.

The online protest, organized under the hashtag #LightUpKogberegbe, has gained significant traction in recent days.

Local residents have highlighted the numerous challenges they are facing as a result of the power outage.

One of the most pressing issues is the inability to access water. Many residents rely on electric water pumps, which require a stable power supply to function.

With the blackout, they are forced to seek water outside their homes, often at great inconvenience.
Mrs. Funmi Adebayo, a resident of Kogberegbe, lamented the situation, saying, "We have been in darkness for too long. It's becoming unbearable. We can't even access clean water without electricity. This is a basic necessity, and it's disheartening to see no action from IKEDC."

Local businesses have also been severely affected, with some reporting significant losses due to spoiled perishable goods and the inability to operate effectively.

In response to the online protest and growing public outcry, the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company released a statement, acknowledging the issue and promising to address it urgently.

One of the officials of the Company, Mr. Seye addressing the challenge said, “Our technical team is working round the clock to restore power to the affected area. We appreciate your patience and understanding."

Meanwhile, community leaders and residents are cautiously optimistic but remain vigilant, continuing their online protest until power is fully restored to the area.

The blackout in Kogberegbe Area serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many communities in Nigeria due to inconsistent power supply, prompting calls for greater investment and improvements in the nation's electricity infrastructure.

As residents anxiously await the return of electricity to their homes, the #LightUpKogberegbe campaign stands as a symbol of their determination to hold utility providers accountable and ensure a brighter, more electrified future for their community.
