Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – March 8, 2025: As the world marked International Women’s Day, the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) took the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable contributions of Nigerian women in the maritime industry.
In a statement released by the organization, SEREC acknowledged the dedication, expertise, and perseverance of women who have broken barriers in the traditionally male-dominated field.
The bulletin, signed by Eugene Nweke, highlighted the crucial roles women play in advancing the maritime sector and the positive impact of their efforts in driving innovation and inclusivity. While recognizing the progress made, the statement also emphasized the need for continued efforts to dismantle existing barriers and create more opportunities for women to thrive.
“As we celebrate these achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering the next generation of women in maritime. We will actively work to break down barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for women to succeed,” the statement read.
The call to action included encouraging women in maritime to actively collaborate in fostering a more inclusive industry, advocating for policies that support women’s empowerment, and celebrating each other’s successes. SEREC also stressed the importance of mentorship, urging the development of a structured succession plan to address the looming age gap in the sector over the next decade.
Women in Nigeria’s maritime industry continue to set new standards, proving that determination and resilience can drive meaningful change. As the momentum for gender equality grows, stakeholders remain hopeful that increased participation of women will further strengthen the maritime sector, ensuring sustainable progress for future generations.
