NIWA Board Chairman Musa Sarkin Adar Expresses Gratitude to President Tinubu at Inaugural Meeting

Harboursandport.com: Lokoja, Nigeria — August 22, 2025: The newly appointed Chairman of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Hon. Musa Sarkin Adar, has extended heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his appointment, describing it as a privilege and a call to national service. The remarks came during the inaugural meeting of the newly constituted NIWA Board of Directors held at the Authority’s headquarters.



In his opening speech, Hon. Adar acknowledged the trust placed in him and fellow board members by President Tinubu, and also thanked the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his role in the appointment process. “Today marks the beginning of another phase in the history of this great organization,” Adar stated. “I consider myself privileged to be part of this journey.”

The Chairman paid tribute to past NIWA leadership, commending their visionary efforts in infrastructure development and staff welfare. He noted that their legacy continues to shape the Authority’s relevance in Nigeria’s maritime sector.



Adar pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders and board members to enhance NIWA’s operations. “I will be fully committed and willing to deploy my time and resources towards the attainment of the Authority’s vision,” he said, emphasizing his goal to build a flexible, professionally managed organization that meets the needs of Nigerians and earns global recognition.

Welcoming the new board, NIWA Managing Director/CEO Mr. Bola Oyebamiji FCIB expressed optimism about the Authority’s future. He highlighted recent achievements, including increased cargo and passenger traffic on inland waterways, improved safety protocols, and expanded public sensitization campaigns. Notably, over 6,000 lifejackets have been distributed, and Water Marshals have been deployed nationwide to enforce safety standards.

Oyebamiji also praised NIWA’s growing partnerships with state governments such as Bayelsa, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and Lagos, which have bolstered the Authority’s operational reach and impact.
