Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - August 1, 2025: The Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering indigenous players in the maritime sector, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Nigeria First’ policy.
This declaration came on the heels of the maiden call of the MV Ocean Dragon, a wholly Nigerian-owned container vessel, at the West African Container Terminal in Onne Port.
Addressing stakeholders at the port on Thursday, July 31, 2025, NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho praised the vessel’s arrival as a powerful symbol of national pride and progress.
In his words, “Beyond its 349 TEU capacity and impressive technical features, what truly inspires us is that this vessel is fully Nigerian-owned,” he said. “It embodies the Renewed Hope agenda and our focus on boosting local maritime content.”
Dantsoho highlighted that the MV Ocean Dragon’s ability to transport thousands of Gross Registered Tonnages efficiently across African destinations speaks to Nigeria’s strategic embrace of international maritime standards, especially those set by the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH) on multimodal connectivity.
“This accomplishment echoes our drive to streamline export operations through Export Processing Terminals,” he added, underscoring the NPA’s goal to connect remote Nigerian producers to global markets seamlessly.
Reaffirming the NPA’s pro-investment stance, Dantsoho emphasized the agency’s support under the leadership of the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. “We remain focused on creating an enabling environment and unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s blue economy.”
The MV Ocean Dragon will ply trade routes across West Africa and extend its reach to ports in Egypt and South Africa, enhancing Nigeria’s maritime footprint across the continent.
