Shippers' Council Highlights Maritime Sector As Cornerstone Of National Progress

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - August 2, 2025: At the 26th Annual General Meeting of the International Chamber of Commerce, ICC in Lagos, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC reaffirmed the pivotal role of the maritime industry in powering Nigeria’s economic development.



Representing NSC’s Executive Secretary/CEO Akutah Pius, Deputy Director of Trade Services, Adaora Nwonu, addressed attendees on the theme “Shipping and Maritime: The Backbone of International Trade.” 



She emphasized the sector’s influence on job creation, regional trade integration, industrial advancement, and positioning Nigeria as a global economic contender.


Nwonu underscored the importance of upgrading Nigeria’s seaports through automation and improved connectivity. She also highlighted the Council’s push to enhance the Ease of Doing Business, vital for the industry’s sustained growth.


Akutah noted NSC’s active role in regulating port charges to avoid arbitrary increases and ensure seamless trade operations. 


He spotlighted major initiatives including: development of Inland Dry Ports and Vehicle Transit Areas; implementation leadership of the National Single Window, NSW; port performance monitoring and process harmonization via the Nigerian Port Process Manual, NPPM, in collaboration with key government agencies


In closing, the NSC urged stronger collaboration with the ICC to transform Nigeria into a regional trade powerhouse, harnessing the maritime industry’s full potential.
