Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria — September 19, 2025: Former Port Manager of Tin-can Island Port, Sylvester Othuke Egede, has called on stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime sector to harness the power of sports—particularly golf—as a strategic tool for national development and investment attraction.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Maritime Golf Tournament, Egede emphasized the untapped potential of Nigeria’s maritime industry, challenging the widespread belief that oil remains the country’s dominant economic driver.
“The maritime industry is the biggest in this country. It is the first point of call and the gateway to the nation’s economy,” Egede stated.
He urged industry players to explore innovative avenues such as sports to foster unity, promote infrastructure development, and enhance global competitiveness. According to Egede, the sector’s vast resources could be channeled into building sports facilities and nurturing athletic talent, thereby contributing to both human and capital development.
Egede praised the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA for its forward-thinking initiatives and commended the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA for sponsoring the tournament. He expressed optimism that the event would evolve into a sustainable platform for networking and economic growth.
“This initiative is very good. By the time we come together through sports—especially golf—we foster development. This is just the beginning, and we are going to take it to the next level,” he added.
The Maritime Golf Tournament marks a new chapter in stakeholder engagement, blending leisure with strategic dialogue to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime economy.
