Harboursandport.com: Abuja, Nigeria — September 1, 2025: The Provisionary Committee of the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard, PC-NCG has commended the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC for its strategic commitment to advancing Nigeria’s blue economy, in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Noah Ichaba, Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of PC-NCG, praised NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku for championing maritime development efforts in the Niger Delta. He described the Commission’s support for maritime security and infrastructure as a “bold step toward sustainable national development.”
Speaking over the weekend in Abuja, Ichaba emphasized that the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard would play a pivotal role in enhancing maritime safety, environmental protection, and law enforcement across Nigeria’s coastal regions. He noted that the Coast Guard, once established, would work closely with the NDDC to combat sea piracy, smuggling, human trafficking, and environmental degradation.
“This partnership is designed to foster economic growth, job creation, and environmental stewardship,” Ichaba said. “It aligns with national policy goals and positions Nigeria to become a global leader in the blue economy.”
Ogbuku had earlier reaffirmed the NDDC’s commitment to supporting security agencies during a recent Nigerian Bar Association conference in Enugu State. He highlighted the Commission’s efforts to secure waterways and promote maritime operations, tourism, and infrastructure development.
With Nigeria’s blue economy estimated at $296 billion, stakeholders believe the collaboration between NDDC and the proposed Coast Guard could unlock vast economic potential in the oil-rich Niger Delta. The region, which accounts for approximately 75% of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, is seen as critical to the country’s maritime future.
In a statement signed by PC-NCG’s Director of Public Affairs and Communications, Dr. Piriye Kiyaramo, Capt. Ichaba called for further investment in port infrastructure and maritime training programs to empower youth and create employment opportunities. He also urged the NDDC to consider integrating Coast Guard support into its development plans to ensure the security of marine assets and infrastructure.
“Together, the NDDC and the Nigerian Coast Guard can drive sustainable development, promote peace, and transform the Niger Delta into a thriving maritime hub,” Ichaba concluded.
