Sunk Barge: Chemical Pollution Threatens Marine Life at Mile 2 Jetty As Authorities Remain Silent

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – October 7, 2025: Constant rainfall is worsening chemical pollution at the Mile 2 jetty, where industrial waste continues to wash into nearby waterways, posing a serious threat to marine life and public health. Despite visible signs of contamination, relevant authorities have yet to respond.

A recent visit by Harboursandport.com revealed piles of industrial chemicals stacked at two locations—one near the Mile 2 bridge and another inside the Clarion Shipping Terminal, where a sunken barge was reportedly headed. The runoff from these chemicals, intensified by persistent rain, is believed to be seeping directly into the river.

Local sources expressed concern that regulatory agencies may be unaware of the severity of the pollution. “It’s possible they don’t even know what’s happening here,” a source at Mile 2 told Harboursandport.com.

Efforts to obtain official reactions have so far been unsuccessful. When contacted, the new General Manager of Corporate Affairs at the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Suleman Makama, said he was in a meeting and promised to respond. However, more than two weeks later, no feedback has been received even when a remainder was sent to him.

Environmental advocates are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further damage to aquatic ecosystems and to hold responsible parties accountable. The silence from regulatory bodies has sparked frustration among stakeholders, who fear that continued inaction could lead to irreversible harm.
