Benue Shippers Association Meets NSC, Pushes For Stronger Support For Development

Harboursandport.com: Abuja, Nigeria – November 30, 2025: The Benue Shippers Association, BSA has called for stronger collaboration and support from the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC to address challenges facing shippers in the state and unlock new opportunities for trade and development.



During a courtesy visit to the NSC Liaison Office in Abuja, the delegation was warmly received by the Executive Secretary/CEO of NSC, Pius Akutah, who assured them of the Council’s commitment to protecting the interests of shippers nationwide.



Akutah revealed that with the new site allocated for the NSC Makurdi Area Office, space would be created for the Association to have its own office.



He acknowledged that only three IDPs are currently operational but emphasized the importance of Benue’s IDP project. NSC has already written to the state government and expressed willingness to support plans for a river port in Makurdi.


On capacity building, the Councol pledged to train both established and upcoming shippers, particularly on the Cargo Defence Fund, and announced plans to establish Border Information Centres to facilitate smoother trade.


Director in charge Consumer Affairs, Ify Okolue, assured the delegation of increased sensitization and capacity-building efforts.


Similarly, Director in charge of Human Relationsanagement, Mustapha Zubairu,  encouraged the Association to continue advocating for the Benue IDP, stressing that their voice is vital in pushing the project forward.

The Director in charge of North-Central Zonal Office, Jeremiah Okoliko, confirmed that stakeholders in the region are already showing interest in supporting the development of an IDP in Benue.


The leader of the delegation, Mhir Aii Iyenge, highlighted pressing challenges including; the urgent need for an Inland Dry Port to support farmers, traders, and neighbouring states such as Taraba and Adamawa.; the Association’s lack of office space and the need for greater sensitization on NSC programmes and opportunities.


The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to improving shipping services, strengthening trade, and opening new opportunities for businesses across Benue State.
