Deeper Knowledge, Digital Preparedness, Ethical Excellence Key to Maritime Journalism – NSC Boss

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – December 23, 2025: The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC Akutah Pius has stressed that sectorial knowledge, digital preparedness, and ethical excellence are pivotal to advancing maritime journalism in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2025 Seminar for Maritime Journalists in Lagos, Akutah—represented by Moses Abere, Director of the Special Duties Department—commended the role of journalists in shaping the maritime industry.

“Over the years, maritime journalists have worked closely with regulators, operators, and policymakers to illuminate the challenges and opportunities of the sector. Your work has contributed to greater transparency, improved public understanding, and stronger accountability within our maritime landscape,” he said.

Akutah noted that the NSC, under the Federal Ministry of Maritime & Blue Economy, has benefitted significantly from the professionalism and sustained coverage of journalists, particularly in regulatory interventions, reforms, and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in Nigeria’s ports.

The Managing Director and CEO of First Mediacon, Sesan Onileimo, lauded the NSC boss for sustaining the annual training programme for maritime journalists.

He described journalism as a dynamic profession that requires constant training and retraining, urging other agencies to support the initiative to strengthen the maritime beat.

Chairman of the occasion, maritime lawyer Emeka Akabogu, stressed the importance of factual and accurate reporting in maritime journalism. He highlighted that the adoption of technology would drive a more efficient port system, calling on government agencies to intensify efforts toward improving port efficiency.

In his presentation titled “National Single Window: Harmonizing NSW for Economic Development”, former acting National President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA, Kayode Farinto, described journalists as the bedrock of the nation’s maritime sector. He underscored their role in promoting reforms and ensuring accountability across the industry.
