Lekki Deep Seaport Hits Nearly 50% Capacity Amid Steady Growth

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - December 17, 2025: The Lekki Deep Seaport has announced that it is operating at nearly half of its designed capacity, following steady month-on-month growth in container throughput since September.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited, Wang Qiang, disclosed this during an end-of-year media parley held at the port on Tuesday.

Wang noted that the milestone reflects growing confidence among shipping lines and cargo owners in Nigeria’s first deep seaport. “We have already reached almost 50 per cent of our port capacity,” he said.

He noted that consistent improvements in the handling of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and stressed that efficient multimodal connectivity is vital to sustaining and accelerating growth. According to him, barge operations now account for about 10 per cent of cargo evacuation from the port.

Wang pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, as crucial for easing congestion and improving access. He also underscored the importance of rail connectivity, given the scale of industrial activity emerging within the Lekki corridor. “I believe the train option is something the government is concerned about, and with the level of industrial activities in this region, we expect that it will be provided,” he added.

While reiterating that Lekki Port is a fully automated terminal, Wang acknowledged that delays may persist until all stakeholders—including government agencies—fully adopt end-to-end digital processes. He emphasized the need for Customs procedures and other port services to be digitalised to reduce cargo dwell time.

Integration between the Customs system, the terminal operating system, and customers is already part of an agreed implementation schedule. Wang stressed that automation can only deliver optimal results if customers, government, and all stakeholders align.

He further explained that improved connectivity would enable the port to effectively double its capacity through performance optimisation, without expanding its physical footprint.

The media tour concluded with visits to the Customs examination area, scanners, and shipside operations within the terminal.
