Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - September 17, 2026: The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has stated that establishing the INTERPOL Data Center in Abuja has helped the Service curb the smuggling of goods and stolen vehicles.
The Comptroller-General, who disclosed this in Apapa while showcasing seized illicit drugs, drones, and other items worth N43.5 billion, said the INTERPOL Data Center provides officers access to more than 152 international databases globally.
He explained that the center, which was set up in July, is the eighth of its kind on the continent and features several databases related to the cross-border movement of goods, particularly vehicles.
In his words, "We have strengthened cargo profiling and risk assessment across the commands, deployed the B’Odogwu platform to bring trade data into assessment, and in July we established an INTERPOL Data Centre at our Headquarters in Abuja.
"It is the 8th on the African continent and gives officers access to more than 152 international databases."He added, "INTERPOL is an organization made up of many bodies, and the NCS is just one of them.
Of course, you know that the police coordinate it, but we have a center in Abuja where we host databases related to the cross-border movement of goods, particularly vehicles.
"We often hear of vehicles being stolen in other climes and people trying to bring them into Nigeria. Before we input those details into our local system, we check the INTERPOL system first to cross-check the status of those vehicles. Once we see that there are question marks on them, we immediately take action and have them impounded," he concluded.
