Nasawara state partners NIWA to build 3 jetties

Harboursandport.com: Lagos --The Nassarawa state government has entered into partnership with the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA to develop water transportation in the state and has concluded plans to construct jetties in the towns of Umasha, Loco and Tuna.

Disclosing this in Lagos, the Commissioner of Works, Housing and Transport in Nasarawa State, Engr. Wada Yahaya Mohammed, said the governor of the state, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has signed agreement with the management of NIWA for the utilization of the waterways.
According to him, “Nasarawa state has border with River Benue, about four local government in Nasarawa State has border with River Benue and the government of the day under the leadership of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura want to improve and introduce the inter model transport so that it would improve the economy and the mobility of the people of the state.
“To achieve this, we are looking at the possibility of utilizing the waterways through establishment of jetties at least in three major local governments. We have started talking with NIWA to jointly establish the jetties and make them effective, that is what led to the establishment of the committee between the state government and NIWA.
“The committee went round and identified three possible places for establishment of the jetties; the places are Umasha, Loco and Tuna,” he noted.
Mohammed said the state governor made a promise to the citizen of the state to introduce inter model transportation so as to improve the economy and mobility of the people of the state. The Commissioner explained that state government has started talking with NIWA to jointly establish the jetties and make them effective.
He said a joint committee between the state and NIWA has been constituted and has identified Umasha, Loco, and Tuna as possible sites for the establishment of the jetties. He also said that the state government is going into partnership with some interested private organization for the development of road transportation system in the state.

“The state government also constructing roads to make sure the linkage of all the local governments in so many location totaling about 300 kilometres from within the state that link one local government and the other.
