Xmas: Customs partners security agencies in tackling smuggling in the country

The Anti-smuggling unit of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operating Unit (FOU) Zone “A” is collaborating with sister security agencies to combat smuggling activities and generated revenue for the federal government as the Christmas celebration draws closer.

Speaking in a press conference in Lagos, the Controller of the Unit, Comptroller Garba Uba Mohammed, stated that the task of tackling smuggling activities in the country cannot be effective without the cooperation and support of other security agencies.

According to him, the Nigeria Customs Service is always holding meetings with other security agencies such as the Department of States Security, DSS, the Nigeria Army, NA and the Nigeria Police Force. 

Mohammed stated this when he hosted members of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria, MARAN, led by its President, Godfrey Bivbere of Vanguard Newspaper. 

The Customs boss noted that “We interact and exchange ideas during these meetings and whenever we need their assistance, we call on them; this is because the Police most especially know the flash points and area of jurisdiction of these smugglers” Mohammed said.

Mohammed also mentioned that “There are certain places we do not go with the Customs officers alone. We employ the Military, Police even the SSR. However, we make sure that we partner with these security agencies because we have a common objective which is Security”.

Speaking further, Garba emphasized that as the society is changing and the year is coming to an end, traders, agents, smugglers may device to use new methods to get away with what they want. But however, the Service is ready to double their efforts, widen their scope of activities, search for information and knowledge and also ensure that all the flash points known to them are reinforced.

“Where we do not even think smugglers or those importers who may decide to short change the government may not take, we will reinforce without even leaving out the soft target areas. We will make sure that our Officers remain on Standby and ensure that no Government money is lost and no smuggled goods are allowed to come into the country.” He concluded.
