The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, FOU, zone A, has intercepted various contraband items with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N1 billion between 10th April to 15th May, 2018.
The Unit also said that a total of N28.9 million was recovered from under payment by importers who cleared their goods from the ports.
Disclosing this in Lagos, the Customs Area Comptroller (CAC) of the Unit, Garba Uba Mohammed, said that the interception of 30 exotic vehicles and other contraband items was as a result of the intelligent reports by his men.
He commended the officers and men of the Unit for living up to their statutory responsibilities and expectations in suppression of smuggling, blocking all revenue leakages as well as enhancing trade facilitation towards sustaining best international standards.
According to him, the detained/seized items include; 30 exotic vehicles including seven Toyota Hilux, (2018 model) three Toyota Prado Jeep (2017 model), one Range rover, one Ford Edge (2015 model), 5,516 bags of foreign parboiled rice (about nine trailers), 1,078 cartons of frozen poultry products, 216 Jerry cans of vegetables oil, 173 bales of used clothes, 683 pieces of used tyres, eight sacks of Indian hemp, as well as two containers with no : MSKU130295/2, MRKU877714/0 as a result of false declaration, among others.
In his words, “We have remained unflinching with our mandates and no amount of distraction will deter us from performing our statutory duties.”
According to Mohammad, the ban on the importation of foreign rice and other consumable items through the land was to reduce unemployment in the country and create more jobs for Nigerians youths as well as encourage local production of the staple food.
The custom boss also said they will continue to fight against illegal importation and to ensure strict enforcement the policies of the federal government to make the country safe as well as enable it collect every revenue for the federal government.
