Apapa gridlock: Lagos government to shut Tin-can/Mile 2 expressway for 3 days palliative work

Harboursandport.com: Lagos - In a bid to keep the roads in good condition ahead of the yuletide season, the Lagos State government will at midnight today close both inward and outward of the Tin-can/Mile2 section of the Apapa-Oshodi expressway to enable the contractors handling the road to carry out palliative works on the failed portions of both sides of the road.
The closure will commence at midnight Friday and end at midnight on Monday.

Disclosing this during an on-site inspection of the work, the Vice Chairman of the Presidential Task team of decongestion of Apapa, Kayode Opeifa, said that the road will be strictly shut to trucks during this 72-hour period, but will be open for tankers, cars and delivery vehicles.

He pointed out that while work is ongoing on the main expressway between Coconut and Mile2 outward Tin-can, palliative of on the failed service lane has also started.
At the opposite side of the road, inward Tin-can; palliative work will be done during the period of the closure of the road.
According to him, “The road will be shut to trucks, not to tankers. Tankers will move, cars will move and delivery vehicles will move. Just like we did before, so whenever that is done, we are telling the truckers to not come out at all within this period or make use of wharf road because there is no road there.
“They have to stay away. There are enough trucks here for the ports to handle in three days and also enough trucks in the trailer parks for the truck people to handle in three days, so stay at home, when the palliative is done they will be able to come.
“The road will be closed today except for tankers, emergency vehicles and construction vehicles as from tomorrow to Monday and will be opened back for the truck drivers on Tuesday,” he stressed.
Speaking on the level of work so far done on the Apapa-Tollgate end of the road which he said is part of “Truck A1” that stretches through seven states terminating in Sokoto, Director Highways, South-West of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi said that the ministry is ensuring that the contractors do quality work.
Adebiyi noted that after the initial resurfacing of the main road between Coconut and Mile2 outward Tin-can, the final surfacing is 200-millimetre stick (0.2 meters) of solid concert.
He noted that the same quality is being done on the Apapa-Tollgate end of the truck A1 being handled by the Dangote Group. He noted that the impression by some Nigerian that the Federal Government is not doing anything about the condition of the nation’s roads is not true.
In his words, “Government is working in all the major roads in Nigeria and it is broken into 4; Truck A, B, C and D. Now, in truck ‘A ‘alone, we have trunk 1-9 and what we are working on is truck A1 alone. We are at the origin of trunk A1. Trunk A1 starts from Apapa wharf, and repair work is on-going in every section of Trunk A1 which terminates in Sokoto, simultaneously.
“From this trunk A1, we have Dangote Group of Companies doing the first segment starting from Apapa and terminating to toll gate, from that toll gate is where Julius Berger starts and stopped at Shagamu, and it goes like that until we get to elena in Sokoto,” he noted.
