Immigration Service, NIS, has arrested five stowaways, including a woman who
hid on the rudder truck of a foreign vessel heading for Las Palmas, Spain.
The five stowaways, Mercy Osayomwanbor(f),
Chinerem Mmaduagwu, Osasu Otakhor, Onikan Sunday and Henry Amuzie were arrested
last week by officials of the NIS following a tip-off by the Master of the
vessel, “M.T. Idi” about 156 nautical miles off the Lagos
shoreline.
Comptroller of the Command, Olubusola Fashakin,
noted that initial report had it that there were two stowaways but on-boarding
the vessel it was discovered that the five persons mentioned above were
onboard.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations
Officer of the Command, Augustus Maisor, the Comptroller stated “The arrest
which was effected on board “M.T. IDI” at about 0206 hours followed
a tip-off by the Master of the vessel about 156 nautical miles off the Lagos shoreline.
“The initial report had it that two stowaways were
on board the said vessel which was en-route Las Palmas, Spain. However, upon
rummaging, the personnel discovered five stowaways inside the rudder truck of
the vessel.”
He further stressed that the arrest provides an
opportunity for the Service to counsel the suspects to discontinue any act that
is capable of soiling the image of the country under the guise of seeking
