NIMASA/BARUGU Patrol Boat Sinks

... Stakeholders call for marine board of inquiry

... It's not our boat - NIMASA

One of the gunboats used by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA for policing the nation's waters during its contract with Global West, on Friday sank in Lagos waters.

The boat, which is one of the three boats used by the Agency then, have been anchored for over six years since the present administration came to power, with the crew claiming that they are being owned backlog of salary.

A video of the sinking boat making the rounds showed some of the crew complaining that they have made calls to NIMASA about the sinking boat about a month ago but the calls were ignored.

This is even as some stakeholders called for a marine board of inquiry to ascertain the reasons leading to the sinking of the boat.

Meanwhile, NIMASA says the boat does not belong to them, noting that it's a property of Global West.

The Agency through its head Public Relations Officer, Osagie Edward, said they had wanted to intervene but could not because there is a legal case involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
