Bayelsa Queens Losses 4 Supporters, As Ijaw Music Star Losses 6 Band Members

…As Gov. Diri expresses sadness

Harboursandport.com: Bayelsa - Four supporters of Bayelsa Queens football club died on Sunday in a road crash while seven others were said to have sustained serious injuries along the Kwale-Asaba road in Delta State.

Similarly, six band members of a popular Ijaw musician, Barrister Smooth, died in a crash along the Kogi-Abuja road.

This is even as the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, expressed sadness over two separate road accidents that claimed the lives of at least 10 Ijaw indigenes on Sunday.

An official of the Bayelsa Ministry of Sports who confirmed the development said that they were travelling to Asaba for the Women FA championship final when the bus conveying them was involved in a fatal crash after Kwale.

The source said the ill-fated bus had a burst tyre and somersaulted, resulting in the fatalities. Among the deceased are three brothers while some aides of the Bayelsa Commissioner for Sport sustained injuries.

The injured are being treated at the Asaba Specialist Hospital.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Daniel Igali, the State Director of Sports, Braveman Wodi and the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa were said to have visited the hospital.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was also said to have directed full treatment for the survivors.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has expressed deep sadness over two separate road accidents that claimed the lives of at least 10 Ijaw indigenes on Sunday.

In one of the crashes along the Kogi-Abuja road, six band members of a popular Ijaw musician, Barrister Smooth, died while the other accident along the Kwale-Asaba highway in Delta State claimed four supporters of the Bayelsa Queens Football Club.

Diri in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, on Monday, described it as a Black Sunday for Bayelsa and the Ijaw nation.

He said the state was thrown into mourning as news of the sad incidents filtered in.

Diri said their death was painful as these youths were active and impacting lives through their musical talent as well as following their passion to support the state’s darling female football team.

His words, “On behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased.

“I also commiserate with the leader of the band, Barrister Smooth. These are very unfortunate and sad incidents that claimed the lives of our active youths. It is a great loss to our state and the Ijaw nation as young talents and breadwinners following their passion had suddenly departed.

I pray that the Lord consoles the families for the painful loss that they have suffered.

“I also pray for quick healing and recovery for those that were injured.”
