Harboursandport.com: Lagos - October 2, 2024: The Tin-can Island Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS Wednesday handed over three containers of hybrid Indian Hemp worth N682 million imported from Canada to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The seized drugs are said to be 10 times more potent than the ones cultivated in the country.
Customs Area Controller, CAC of the Command, Dera Nnadi, who disclosed the seizures during the official handing over ceremony, said the interception was made through credible intelligence from their foreign partners.
He said, "The Command having received actionable intelligence on the suspected importation of illicit dangerous drugs from one of the source countries, intercepted the three containers which we are showcasing today."
"The details of each containers which are of the subject matter today are, container number MSMU 518030/2(1X40FT). A joint 100% physical examination was conducted on 2nd Aug, 2024, and the examination revealed 77 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 38.5kg.
"Similarly, the command also intercepted container number MSMU 602957/0 (1X40FT) on the 8th of August, 2024 and the container also contains 532 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 265.025kg.
"The third container with number FSCU 927461/3 (1X40FT), was also intercepted on the 8th of August, 2024 with 37.5kg, in 75 packages of Cannabis Indica.
"Investigation by the Command and our partner agency the NDLEA is ongoing and the NDLEA will update you on the interdiction, arrest and prosecution.
"In furtherance of the synergy between the NDLEA and the NCS, the Command is handing over the contents of the three containers totaling 684 packets of Cannabis Indica weighing 341.025kg with a street value of N682, 050,000.00.
"The Command and indeed the Service will deploy all necessary resources and strategies at our disposal and in collaboration with other security and other regulatory agencies check the menace of illegal importation of illicit and dangerous substances. We are more than committed to deliver on this mandate," he noted
While receiving the seized drugs, Deputy Commander Nacortic, Adanu Edoh, said that these drugs are 10 times stronger than the Indian Hemp cultivated in Nigeria.
He explained that a new development is being witnessed with the interception of these drugs from Canada while in the past, Indian Hemp were smuggled out of Nigeria.
According to Edoh, "We know that we grow Cannabis in Nigeria, popularly known as Indian hemp but, this one is a special brand that is ten times stronger than the one grown in Nigeria and that is why it is being imported to Nigeria.
"Ten wraps of Nigeria Cannabis is equal a wrap of the imported ones because it is more potent and far stronger than what we have in Nigeria," he noted.
