Harboursandport.com: Lagos - October 2, 2024: The President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, NCMDLCA, Mr. Lucky Amiwero has said that Nigeria has lost it's status as preferred destination for transshipment trade in West Africa sub-region to Benin Republic, Togo, Cote d'Ivoir and Ghana.
Amiwero disclosed this in Lagos during the unavailing of a compendium of activities of the Council's achievements over the years.
At the event which was also used to mark his 71st birthday, the NCMDLCA's President said "You go to Togo, it is almost a hub port, talking about Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, Ghana's port operations level is higher than ours. Ghana now has transit trade, they have taken over our transit trade. "The transshipment destination now is not in Nigeria, it is from Togo, Benin Republic, Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana.
"We have a problem, the problem is that we do not have experts in these areas.
"I overhead the minister of Marine and Blue Economy say that they are just trying to look into new technology and other things.
"When you look at the blue economy, it is not something you give to a ministry, it is a country thing because when you look at it, it talks more about fishing, mining, deep sea mining, renewal energy etc.
"You are talking about so many of these things that are not under the marine and blue economy. It is a scattered thing, it is something the government have to take control of.
"Where are we going as a nation? Let's talk about the maritime sector.
"Now, if you don't write and correct, things can't be done right.
The port operations processes must be predictable, consistent, and transparent. These are the three things that make port operations easier," he noted.
