Harboursandport.com:Lagos-14, July,2025:The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA has officially retired Captain Claudius Adeleke Afotan after a distinguished 28-year career marked by an impeccable safety record.

Fondly known as “Baba Ilaje,” Captain Afotan sailed various government patrol boats for over 500 hours across Lagos waterways without a single recorded mishap or vessel damage.

His exceptional discipline and professionalism earned him widespread respect within the maritime community.

At a brief ceremony held at the LASWA office, General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel praised Captain Afotan’s unwavering dedication to duty, describing him as a symbol of maritime excellence.

“Captain Afotan’s legacy is one of commitment, caution, and care. For 28 years, he safely transported high-ranking government officials, federal ministers, state commissioners, celebrities—including Burna Boy and Wizkid—LASWA staff, and marine guards during events, enforcement, and monitoring operations. He is the kind of hero our waterways need and will remember,” Emmanuel stated.

Staff and colleagues present at the ceremony commended the captain’s calm demeanor, deep knowledge of the waterways, and steadfast commitment to safety.

They noted that while his retirement marks the end of an era, his legacy sets a high standard for the next generation of boat captains navigating Lagos’ growing water transport system.
