Representing the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, delivered a compelling message about Nigeria’s strategic role in global maritime affairs.
He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to modernizing its maritime infrastructure, embracing innovation, and driving sustainable economic growth across its coastal and inland waterways.
At the forum—which spotlighted “Job Creation and Economic Growth in Nigeria's Maritime and Aviation Sectors”—Oyebamiji emphasized that Nigeria’s vast coastline and navigable waterways are vital resources not only for domestic development but for regional and international collaboration.
“The IMO seat will empower Nigeria to influence the global maritime ecosystem and position the country as a major stakeholder in shaping international maritime policies, especially in the West African sub-region,” he stated.
Oyebamiji described Nigeria’s coastal waters as an “untapped goldmine,” echoing the government's marine and blue economy vision aimed at unlocking investment and employment opportunities. NIWA also presented key initiatives designed to revitalize inland navigation, improve safety, and streamline cargo movement.
Nigeria’s geographical advantage as a gateway to West Africa was front and center in Oyebamiji’s presentation. He argued that the nation’s maritime infrastructure and reform agenda are aligning with global standards—making the country well-positioned to play a more influential role at the IMO.
“Our pursuit of an IMO Council seat is part of our broader strategy to accelerate economic integration and maritime development across Africa,” he said.
Adding to the delegation's impact was the presence of Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development. Keyamo showcased opportunities in Nigeria’s aviation sector, advocating for increased global investment and technical partnerships to support the country’s modernization drive.
Nigeria’s active participation at the Singapore symposium is part of a broader diplomatic effort to secure support ahead of the IMO Council elections later this year. With strong endorsements, a growing blue economy strategy, and an emphasis on regional leadership, Nigeria aims to bring fresh energy and representation to global maritime governance.
