... As Minister Showcases Government’s Maritime Achievements
Harboursandport.com: Lagos - July 7, 2025: Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of SIFAX Group, has called for a comprehensive renewal of Nigeria’s port infrastructure to unlock the full potential of the country’s maritime sector.
Speaking at the 7th Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime (TAAM) Conference, held over the weekend at the University of Lagos, Afolabi emphasized that modern and efficient infrastructure is the cornerstone of a thriving port system.
“Nigeria’s blue economy is a sleeping giant,” he said. “Our vast coastline holds immense untapped potential. If harnessed responsibly, it can generate employment, boost port efficiency, attract investment, and protect our environment for future generations.”
He stressed that resilient and sustainable infrastructure is essential to driving competitiveness and operational excellence across Nigeria’s maritime corridors.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, outlined the Federal Government’s strategic reforms aimed at transforming the maritime industry into a key driver of national development.
He highlighted the recently introduced National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, which provides a unified framework for growth in areas such as: Port development, Fisheries and aquaculture, Ocean governance, Marine biotechnology, Renewable energy and Coastal tourism.
Oyetola also detailed major infrastructure projects currently underway, including:
The Western Ports Rehabilitation Programme, he said the following has commenced: Reconstruction of Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports and plans to revive the National Carrier through a public-private partnership
He underscored the importance of sustainability in all modernization efforts, with a focus on energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and waste management.
On Maritime Security and Global Engagement, the Minister proudly noted that Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents in its territorial waters for three consecutive years—a milestone that has contributed to the stabilization of the Gulf of Guinea and earned international praise.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s bid for a Category “C” seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, a move aimed at giving the country a stronger voice in shaping global maritime policies.
Oyetola called for deeper collaboration between the government and academic institutions, particularly in research areas such as marine robotics and other frontier technologies.
