Western Marine Customs Backs MARAN’s 2025 Maritime Lecture As Command Gets Major Facelift

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria - August 7, 2025: The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has thrown its weight behind the upcoming 2025 edition of the MARAN Annual Maritime Lecture, MAMAL, signaling strong institutional support for the flagship event of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria, MARAN.

MAMAL 2025 is scheduled for August 27 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The lecture will focus on critical issues affecting the rising cost of goods in Nigeria—a topic described as “germane and timely” by Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, Customs Area Controller, CAC of the Western Marine Command.

During a courtesy visit by MARAN’s Executive Council on August 4, Comptroller Ntadi confirmed his attendance and praised the relevance of the lecture’s theme.

“Of course, I will be willing to attend the event as the topic is very germane and critical towards addressing factors that contribute to the rising cost of goods in the country,” he stated.

Since assuming office just over two months ago, Comptroller Ntadi has spearheaded a visible transformation of the command’s infrastructure and environment:

  • Freshly painted buildings and perimeter fencing

  • A new signpost under construction at the command’s entrance

  • Removal of shanties and unauthorized structures that previously posed security risks

  • Renovation of jetties and ongoing construction work to enhance operational efficiency

“The presence of the shanties and activities of suspicious elements milling around posed a serious security risk. We gave encroachers a month’s notice before clearing the area,” Ntadi explained.

The contract for the building of a modern office complex was awarded by the Customs management under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi. Ntadi expressed confidence that the project would be completed before year-end.

In a recent operation, the CAC said the  command intercepted 503 bags of smuggled rice and seized six boats used in the illicit trade along the Badagry axis—underscoring the command’s renewed commitment to curbing smuggling.

MARAN President, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere, assured Comptroller Ntadi of the association’s full support.

“MARAN is committed to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the Command to enable it deliver on its mandate. We are willing and open to work with the command,” he affirmed.
