Kanwan Katsina Extols Legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello at Memorial Lecture

Harboursandport.com: Katsina, Nigeria – January 26, 2026: The Kanwan Katsina, District Head of Ketare, Usman Bello Kankara, a retired Customs officer, has paid glowing tribute to the late Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the defunct Northern Nigeria, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape the nation six decades after his assassination.

Speaking as Royal Father at the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Katsina State Council, Usman Bello urged leaders across all levels of government to emulate the Sardauna’s values of unity, foresight, and commitment to public service.

He noted that Ahmadu Bello’s name remains dominant in historical and contemporary discourse on governance and democratic leadership.

The Kanwan Katsina commended the NUJ for organizing the annual lecture, stressing that such events help preserve the memory of the late premier. He recalled that Ahmadu Bello’s establishment of institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria—where he himself graduated in 1981—laid the foundation for socio-economic development in Northern Nigeria.

Guest speaker Bala Abdullahi Mohamed of Bayero University, Kano, highlighted the Sardauna’s role in fostering unity among diverse ethnic groups in the Northern Region and implementing projects that spurred development.

The event also featured the presentation of an award of honour to Usman Bello Kankara, who serves as Patron of the NUJ Katsina State Council, in recognition of his continued support for the union’s activities.

Among the dignitaries present was the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Faruk Lawal Jobe, who delivered a keynote address praising Ahmadu Bello’s virtues as worthy of emulation by today’s leaders.

In a related development, Usman Bello congratulated NUJ Chairman Katsina State Council, Tukur Hassan Dan Ali, on his promotion to Permanent Secretary in the Katsina State Civil Service. He described the appointment as meritorious and urged him to work diligently for the progress of the state, while wishing him divine guidance in his new role.
