NIMASA Rallies Stakeholders To Develop National Maritime Decarbonization Action Plan

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – February 26, 2026: The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA has pledged to provide regulatory leadership, technical coordination, and stakeholder engagement in the development of a National Action Plan on maritime decarbonization, aligning Nigeria with global climate goals under the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project.

Speaking at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop in Lagos, the Director General of NIMASA, Dayo Mobereola, represented by Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, Executive Director of Operations, described the initiative as a critical step toward actualizing the Federal Government’s blue economy and climate objectives.

Mobereola emphasized that the National Action Plan will reflect Nigeria’s realities, leverage existing capacities, address gaps, and align with broader economic and environmental priorities.

“This transition is not merely about compliance with international obligations. It is about safeguarding our marine environment, protecting public health, strengthening the blue economy, and ensuring that our maritime industry remains competitive and future-ready,” he said.

Astrid Dispert, Technical Manager of the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project, highlighted that the initiative aims to advance a coherent, globally aligned regulatory framework to accelerate maritime decarbonization. She noted that NIMASA plays a pivotal role in driving the project at the national level.

The IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project provides technical expertise and institutional support to help countries develop and implement National Action Plans that promote sustainable shipping practices, encourage investment in clean technologies, and strengthen long-term emissions reduction capacity.

Through this collaboration, Nigeria is advancing deliberate steps toward maritime decarbonization, reinforcing its commitment to global climate goals and ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for the sector.
