Harboursandport.com: Cross River State, Nigeria - November 4, 2026: The Acting Customs Area Controller, CAC of the Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone/Akwa Ibom Area Command, Nkiru Nwala, a Deputy Comptroller, has launched a sweeping diplomatic and security campaign across Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, moving the Customs Command away from isolated enforcement toward a unified, intelligence-driven front.
In a series of high-level engagements, the Acting CAC targeted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and regional Police Commands to build a collaborative wall against cross-border crimes.
Recognizing that the increasingly complex nature of economic sabotage requires faster information exchange, Nwala brokered new terms for real-time intelligence sharing and joint field operations.
Nwala noted that the engagements form part of the efforts to translate the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi's strategic framework of Collaboration, Consolidation and Innovation into practical outcomes.
Her strategy aims to lock down vulnerable coastal trade routes while ensuring that legitimate commercial movement is not unnecessarily hindered.
During her critical meeting at the EFCC Uyo Zonal Directorate, Nwala emphasized the Command’s readiness to deepen cooperation to protect national financial integrity.
The alliance took on an unexpected dimension when EFCC Zonal Director Oshodi Johnson raised the alarm over a surging digital threat. Johnson warned that fraudsters are actively impersonating public officials online, using stolen names, ranks, and official photographs to defraud the public.
He urged Nwala’s personnel to exercise extreme caution on social media, linking personal digital responsibility directly to institutional reputation.
Nwala’s tour also took her to the Cross River and Akwa Ibom State Police Commands, where she solidified operational coordination with Police Commissioners to safeguard critical infrastructure and combat smuggling syndicates.
The aggressive campaign marks a decisive shift in how the Command intends to oversee operations across its jurisdictions, including the Calabar Free Trade Zone.
While Nwala has successfully opened vital communication channels, the ultimate success of her initiative will now depend on how effectively these high-level agreements translate into practical solutions on the ground.
Other places visited by the new CAC are Calabar Free Trade Zone, where she met with the Director, Hajiya Binta: the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA and Eco Marine Terminal, where she held discussions with the Port Manager, Ibifiri Ekine, and the terminal's General Manager, Nelson Ovude.
She also visited the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Cross River State Command, and the Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State.
