an effort to curb the high level corruption and ease clearing process at the
port, the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS and the Association of Nigeria Licensed
Customs Agents, ANLCA has set up a joint committee to address the problems.

The suggestion of the Customs boss followed a series
of complains on hindrances to smooth clearance of goods at the port by the
ANLCA team.
Members
of the committee who are expected to commence sitting on Monday next week are
to have their initial meeting on Friday.
Some
of the issues to be addressed by the committee but not limited to curbing corruption
at the ports, clearing process, involvement of serving Customs officers in
clearing business, multiple Customs checkpoint and others.
When
asked of about the committee, National resident of ANLCA, Prince Olayiwola Shittu
confirmed that a committee has been set up but stressed that it is not yet for
public. Shittu however noted that the outcome if followed through by the
management of the NCS would be for the good of cargo
clearing business.
National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Deputy Controller, DC, Joseph Attah, said
though there is the giver and the taker for corruption to take place, most of
the time it is the insincerity of the part of importers and their agents that
is responsible most of the time.
