The anti-smuggling
unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Federal Operations Unit, Zone “A”
has handled over the 8,633 substandard gas cylinders impounded last month to
the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
The Customs Area Controller
(CAC) of the Unit, Garba Uba Mohammed, said after the collection of the revenue
due to government, it is important to handover the consignment to SON to
determine their standard.
Babatunde Alajogun,
Chief State Counsel to SON, expressed happiness for the effort made by the Service
in interception of the product. He also assured the NCS of further investigation
by SON.
Alajogun spoke on
inter- agencies relationship and the need for collaboration in order to ride
the country of substandard goods.
Also speaking at the
official handover is Enginner B.E Obua, SON Director in charge of Enforcement said
the suspected products were the dilapidated and over used gas cylinda brought
to Nigeria for sale.
The Director said the
product is substandard hence it has no SON license and approval. Obua further
noted that such products are capable of causing death of citizens in the
country and cannot be allowed to go into circulation in the country. The SON
boss also expressed displeasure at the manner which people bring in goods or
products that are not usable in their country of origin as if the people living
in the country are pigs.

continue in the fight against substandard products and will continue to collaborate
with other agencies in the country in the fight against illegal importation of
goods, proper examination of products, and importation of substandard
products amongst others.
