Harboursandport.com: Port Harcourt - The recent sacking of four indigenous divers, including the embattled President of the National Association of Professional Divers, NAPROD, Eldwick Dickson Zambkzibe, by Messrs Hydrodive, contractors to Shell Petroleum, has sparked reactions in the nation’s diving sector.
Zambkzibe, alongside three other
members of NAPROD, ThankGod Ara, Samuel Akide, and Emmanuel Nsrimi were
recently sacked from the Bonga flex joint replacement project for alleged
incompetence.
A source at Messrs Hydrodive who
spoke to Harboursandport.com on the condition of
anonymity described the development as sad, adding that this has cast a shadow
of doubt on the ability of Nigerian divers.
Stating that more professionalism
had been expected from Zambkzibe especially, the source said it is critical
that the Diving Advisory Board urgently looks into this development to prevent
looming incidents as competency of divers remain a major guarantee for safe
dive operations.
It was gathered that the NAPROD
president was sacked from the project for an alleged inability to comport
himself underwater and failure to deliver the job he was contracted for on his
last dive.
ThankGod Ara was dismissed for
health-related reasons, Samuel Akide for incompetence in his last dive and
Emmanuel Nsrimi for lack of knowledge on what to do underwater.
Since the news of the sacking of
the divers, top industry players have questioned the integrity of NAPROD and
also urged the government to professionally regulate indigenous divers through
the office of the Chief Inspector of Diving, to uphold competence lest its an effort at increasing local participation in diving be ridiculed through
dishonesty, incompetence, and illegality.
As at press time, efforts to
reach the diving contractor, Hydrodive was not successful.
