The Council of Maritime Truck Union and Associations COMTUA has decried alleged Illegal towing, harrasment and extortion of its members by the Port Standing Task Team (PSTT).
In a statement addressed to the Minister of Transportation signed by the National President, Mr Adeyinka Aroyewun noted that the PSTT have constituted itself into a traffic management unit whose only interest is to arrest and impound vehicles of the Union members which have not violated any traffic regulation.
Aroyewun also stated that several complaints by the association against illegal checkpoint and extortion on the road have not received attention by the PSTT, rather the business of extortion from trucks has been their priority.
"This they do regularly and even this morning Thursday, 23rd June 2022, Our members with legitimate call up documents enroute the port were arrested by men of this team on the queue. This EXPORT vehicles are on the export line as scheduled by the movement regulations.
"The PSTT in connivance with some unions and one Mr Hassan Adekoya have constituted themselves into a team to frustrate the business of our members.
We are pleading with your office to look into the excesses of this committee to forestall a predictable breakdown of law and order on the port corridor.
"While state and non stake actors extort and cause traffic without check, our trucks and drivers who are victims are made to serve suffer double jeopardy in the hands of PSTT.
He however called on the Ministry of Transportation to address all anomalies rocking the Transport system at the ports.
