Just In: Drug Barons Sponsor Nigerian Politicians During Election - Marwa

According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), drug lords fund candidates during elections in exchange for favorable legislation that will help their illegal enterprise.

Buba Marwa, the chairman of the NDLEA, revealed this in an interview with Channels TV, saying that agents had previously detained politicians who were in possession of illegal narcotics.

"We have detained politicians who are either in elected office or have left it. One of them was recently imprisoned in Lagos. He was attempting to carry 1 kg, possibly to utilize it as campaign money.

In order to ensure that the appropriate laws are passed to support their course, Mr. Marwa stated, "as you know, the cartels also participate in political institutions. They really pay politicians into the various levels."

The announcement from the NDLEA chairman was made while this year's International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was being observed.

Asekun Kehinde Sakiru, a former vice chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), was detained by the NDLEA in May at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on drug trafficking charges.

Similar to this, the NDLEA detained disgraced senior police officer Abba Kyari in February for his alleged participation in drug trafficking.

Mr. Marwa had asked for drug tests in April as part of the screening of candidates for the presidency of the ruling All Progressives Congress. This was prior to the political parties' primaries.
