Harboursandport.com: Lagos- October 31, 2024: Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Shipowners Association, NISA, Chief Isaac Jolapamo, has urged the Federal Government to create a conducive environment for indigenous ship ownership.

Recall that the lack of indigenous ship ownership has over the years have reduced  opportunities for young cadets seeking the mandatory sea time training, Jolapamo therefore stressed

the need for the federal government to as matter of urgency introduce measures that would alleviate the difficulties encountered by seafarers in obtaining sea time.

According to him, "What the Federal Government should do is to make owning ships and operating vessels attractive in order to draw in more ships because without ships, nothing is going to happen."

In an exclusive interview with *Harboursandport.com, Jolapamo revealed that most of the ships operating on the nation's waterways are foreign owned.

When asked about future actions, he suggested that the government should create incentives for owning ships and operating vessels to encourage Nigerians to go into ship ownership.

He further disclosed that many ships that seem to be owned by Nigerians are actually owned by foreigners who use Nigerians as front representatives.

In his words, "You have foreigners whose grandchildren are now doing the same business that their grandfathers were doing when the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC started. We brought most of them to this country, with  their portfolios as their offices."
