NIMASA Unveils Maritime Labour e-Platform, Pilot Test Conducted In Lagos

Harboursandport.com: Lagos, Nigeria – November 14, 2025: The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA has introduced a new Maritime Labour e-Platform, a digital solution designed to automate maritime labour registration and regulation processes in Nigeria.

The platform, which was officially pilot-tested in Lagos on Friday November 14,2025, is expected to go live in January 2026.

It represents a major step toward modernizing labour administration in the maritime sector and aligning Nigeria with international best practices.

According to NIMASA, the e-platform will: automate manual processes for seafarer and employer registration; improve service delivery and efficiency; facilitate the issuance of biometric identity cards for dockworkers; enhance compliance with the International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006, and national regulations as well as serve as a central database for maritime labour statistics to support capacity building and welfare initiatives.

During the pilot test, stakeholders including the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, dockworkers, seafarers, and other maritime professionals were introduced to the platform.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Ibrahim Sidi, Director of Maritime Labour Services at NIMASA, emphasized that the e-platform would transform labour administration in the sector.

“This initiative will kick start in January and will ensure digital governance, improved service delivery, and innovation in maritime labour management,” Sidi said.

The sensitization exercise forms part of NIMASA’s broader push toward digital governance and innovation in the maritime industry.

By creating a robust and integrated labour data system, the agency aims to strengthen transparency, improve welfare, and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global maritime space.
