Harboursandport.com: Kaduna, Nigeria – March 13, 2026: The Federal Operations Unit, FOU Zone ‘B’ of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has intercepted two live pangolins being illegally transported along the Kano–Jigawa axis, in a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking.
The arrest took place on March 12, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m., during a stop-and-search operation carried out by operatives of the Unit as part of a proactive enforcement sweep.
Officials confirmed that the seizure was effected in line with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES, which prohibits trade practices that threaten the survival of wild species.
Upon interception, the pangolins were secured in appropriate cages and conveyed to the FOU Zone ‘B’ headquarters in Kaduna. Physical examination revealed that each animal weighed approximately 15 kilograms.
The Comptroller of the Unit, Comptroller Aminu Sule, has ordered a full-scale investigation to determine the source and intended destination of the endangered species.
“This seizure sends a clear message that Zone ‘B’ will not be a transit point for wildlife traffickers,” Comptroller Sule stated.
Pangolins are recognized globally as one of the most trafficked mammals, with their scales and meat often targeted by illegal trade networks. The interception underscores the Customs Service’s commitment to combating wildlife crime and protecting biodiversity.
The NCS emphasized that the operation reflects its vigilance in enforcing environmental laws and international treaties, while also safeguarding Nigeria’s ecological heritage.
Authorities say the investigation will focus on dismantling the trafficking network behind the attempted smuggling, ensuring that those responsible face the full weight of the law.
The Customs Service reaffirmed its resolve to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across Nigeria’s borders, pledging continued collaboration with international partners to curb the illegal wildlife trade.
